Glug Birmingham is back for 2020! We’re incredibly excited to kick the year off with four talks from purveyors of stunningly beautiful design shaped around games.
From creating sought after coffee table books of the highest quality to iconic designs that set the tone for a generation, there’ll be something for everyone at Mama Roux’s with Digbeth Dining Club quietly tickling those tastebuds in the background.
Ben Wilson is a game designer, currently working on an unannounced project at Sumo Digital Nottingham. He also makes solo, independent games, and co-organises indie community game jams.
Read Only Memory
Darren is a publisher, art director and creative consultant based in Barcelona, Spain. He founded Read-Only Memory in 2012 with the aim of creating visually spectacular, extensively researched and beautifully written titles, which would document the pioneers, milestones, titles and cultures that have shaped the games industry.
Nicky is co-founder/director of graphic design practice Studio.Build, together with Michael C.Place. The studio works with clients big and small around the world.
They met during the development of the Sony Playstation launch title Wipe’out” in 1995, when Nicky led the game development team, and Michael was part of maverick studio The Designers Republic. Considered (quite literally) a ‘game changer’ Wipe’out” fused technology, music and graphics in a new culture clash and went on to shape the longstanding Wipe’out” series, as well as influence the gaming landscape more widely.
Currently, a lead game designer at ustwo games, having most recently shipped Assemble with Care for Apple Arcade. Joel has worked in level design for most of his career and it’s still the thing that he identifies the most with.
Three years ago Joel moved to London from Birmingham where he worked for 9 years at Swordfish and Codemasters in Birmingham on games like Toybox Turbos and 50Cent: Blood On the Sand. More recently he has been experimenting with making shorter & more personal games, Instagram filters as games and contributing to the Meditations game project.
